Upon his return from Paris and Mannheim in 1779 Mozart became organist at the court and cathedral of Salzburg’s archbishop Colloredo—perhaps the greatest nemesis of Mozart’s Salzburg years. Although he seems to have composed the bare minimum required by the new position we have to thank Colloredo, among several other important works, for the composition of a set of five psalms and Magnificat, K. 321. A mix of festive trumpets, masterful counterpoint, and extravagant bravura writing for the soprano soloist make for some of Mozart’s most exhilarating sacred music. We combine the Vespers with Mozart’s Organ solo Mass, featuring the new Italian organ.
