W. A. Mozart: Missa solemnis in C Major, K. 66
Cajetan Hagenauer, son of Lorenz Hagenauer, the Mozarts’ landlord and family friend, had entered the Benedictine monastery of St. Peter’s Abbey in Salzburg. When Father Dominicus celebrated his first mass in 1769 Wolfgang composed a solemn setting of the ordinary. The performance, directed by his father Leopold, on 15 October was such a success that it is believed to have led to Wolfgang’s first Italian tour. No wonder—the spectacular choral masterwork by the 13-year-old prodigy combines youthful freshness with the depth of a mature master.
